| General Pathology Elective (18CA711)
Prerequisites: 3rd or 4th year status
Basic Description: Students will
participate in regular teaching
activities of the Pathology
Department including daily
lectures, demonstrations, and
departmental meetings. After
these general meetings, the student
will be expected to attend and observe
procedures such as FNAs, bone
marrows, plasmapheresis, frozen
sections, processing surgical
specimens, and autopsies, to learn
the role of the pathologist in patient
care. Then they will participate in
resident workup of cases
(reviewing slides, etc.) and sign-out
sessions with attending pathologist.
The student may elect to spend
most of their time in any one or more
of the following major subdivisions of
pathology for more specialized training
and study:
- Surgical Pathology
- Autopsy Pathology
- Clinical Chemistry
- Hematology, special and routine
- Blood Banking
- Microbiology
- Cytology
Requirements to achieve level 3 competency are as follows:
Competency Addressed:
- I – Effective communication
- VIII – Problem solving
Grading Policy:
- 30% Oral presentation(s) or paper
- 60% Daily application of new knowledge
- 10% Attendance and participation in conferences
What qualifies this activity as level 3?
If the student gives 4 oral reports during daily sign out sessions which are then graded using Likert Scale Problem Solving Evaluation Forms (available on IUSOM website, copies available in Dr. Roepke’s office). Alternatively, or in addition, the student may present a topic of interest related to pathology at morning conference (45 minutes -1 hour) that will be evaluated using Likert scales. Another option is to write a case study with review of the literature for possible publication which would meet requirements for competency I (Likert scale for communication).
Assessment tool(s) used:
Person(s) responsible for assessment:
All pathologists in the department may be involved in evaluation of the student in their respective areas. However, Dr. Roepke (and Dr. Wu in Dr. Roepke’s absence) will be ultimately responsible for the cumulative and final evaluation.

This will be done by accompanying residents and staff on consultations and by studying blood, bone marrow, and lymph node slides under the supervision of the attending staff and residents. The current workload includes 200 bone marrows and 40,000 CBC’s annually. Flow cytometry testing, lymph node, fine needle aspirate, bone marrow and peripheral blood specimens are also readily available.
